Electricians Bristol - Garden Lighting

You spend all that time creating a masterpiece garden that the neighbours will envy. Ooops. You just realised you forgot to install the landscape lighting. The best time to plan a good landscape lighting design is when you are planning your garden layout for your Bristol home. That’s the time to get advice from a Bristol electrician.  Electricians have experience with garden lighting and should be able give you all the advice you need.

Landscape lighting design can be a simple lighting layout or a work of art blending nature with artificial light, incorporating colour, shape and texture. You choose.  What looks ordinary and dull during the day can be transformed into rich colour during the darker hours of night. The nature of landscape lighting demands versatility. With a wide variety of different surfaces and objects to be illuminated in a Bristol Garden the type of light and its placement needs to be considered very carefully.

Gather Your Ideas. Go over your Bristol garden design and decide on the objects, plants or trees you want to illuminate.

If you have one prominent feature in one part of the garden such as a large tree or a sculpture then you can concentrate your lighting on that object and have low level ground lighting surrounding it in the rest of the garden. On the other hand you may decide just to scatter general low level ground lighting in amongst plants of the same height which will create a flat effect but will give you a rainbow of colour.  An Electrician will be able to give you advice to help you develop your ideas.

Floodlight or Spotlight? To help you with your landscape lighting design there are typically two lamp and reflector types. The wide angle lenses are used to flood a surface with a wash of light where a narrow angled lens is used for laser-like accuracy to put a spot of light on an object. Flood lighting works best by positioning it under leafy shrubs and trees. By doing this the floodlight will create shadows within the foliage and spill out onto surrounding plants. If you are trying to light a very large tree you may consider several floodlights to get an even spread of light. Spotlights work best if they are correctly positioned and aimed at the feature you are trying to highlight. A good way to get this right is to temporarily connect the spotlight and move it backwards and forwards until the right amount of light is highlighting the feature.

Colour is an important consideration for any landscape lighting design for your Bristol garden. The most common source of light is white light. When white light is used it generally brings out the true color of the surrounding plants and objects because it contains all the visible colours.

By using coloured filters or sleeves attached to the light fitting, colored light can be used to emphasize the natural colour of the surrounding plant foliage. Colours such as yellow are useful to use as it is a warm colour and brings out the best in the wood of trunks and branches. Reds and Blues are also very popular colours to use.

Textures with Water. Nothing in nature is smooth or symmetrical. With this fact in mind, light that is aimed at an angle onto rough textured surfaces can play an important part to your landscape lighting design. With the added element of moving water such as a fountain or waterfall, flickering shadows and reflections can be created. These are very soothing to the viewer.
Glare. To See and not be seen. When locating the in ground light fittings in your garden try and hide them away from view by using rocks or other features. There is nothing worse than ruining a perfectly good landscape lighting design by having all of your light fittings visible. Normally the light source or lamp of the fitting is not guarded and will create glare. Avoid this at all cost.

If you have not yet installed outdoor lighting in your Bristol garden, you are in for a real treat. Not only will you be adding a whole new dimension to your garden, you will be doubling the use of it with outdoor lighting.  Be aware your garden is going to look different at night than it does during the day when you incorporate outdoor lighting.  In general, it’s going to look a lot more beautiful as you can set up the lights to focus on exactly what you want to display in your Bristol Garden.  A Bristol electrician can give you advice on the best lighting for your Bristol garden.  An experienced electrician will be familiar with all aspects of garden lighting.

Setting up outdoor lighting is definitely easier when you have a helper or get it done by an electrician. It’s difficult to know by day exactly how the lighting is going to look at night. No doubt you will need to make some adjustments when you first turn the lights on in your Bristol garden. Just experiment with them until you get things just the way you want them.

When setting your spotlights, consider carefully what you want to focus upon. Could it be a piece of garden statuary, a fountain or a beautiful shrub? Key being, the distance you set the spot light from your focus object. Start out with a distance of about 3 feet away from the object, setting the spotlight to shine slightly upwards.

Trees are particularly beautiful when lit at night. Try setting a spot light about 6′ in front of the tree and directing the light as high as possible. Perhaps an even more dramatic look is to place the light high up in the tree and direct the light downward. This is a great way to bring style to your Bristol garden.

Try the lighting on the trees both ways and see which look you like best. Once you are sure you have your lights just where you want them, it’s time to hide the electrical cord between the lamps. You could bury it an inch or two underground, but I recommend you simply cover it up with bark dust or whatever other medium matches the surrounding area. The reason being is plants grow and change shape. A shrub that looks great lit up with outdoor lighting tonight may have grown enough to actually cover over the lamp next season and will need to be moved. If in doubt just ask a local Bristol electrician to advice you.

Some manufactures of outdoor lighting offer colored lenses at an additional cost. These too can be particularly dramatic when focused upon a white statue or moving water. While a great idea, so far I have not been impressed with any outdoor lighting that runs by solar power. If you have no electricity nearby, consider the use of using tiki torches to light up your garden on those special occasions. Just make sure they are well stabilised and aren’t anywhere near anything flammable, including tall plants and trees.
